My Personal Advocacy Journey

Let us put our minds together and see what life we can make for our children.”   Sitting Bull

I love this quote.  I live and work on the Wind River Indian Reservation.  My husband and children are Native American and I feel that this is so needed for Native American children.  Advocacy requires many people working together for the benefit of all.  I am inspired by those who are trying to make a difference right now and I want to be one of them.  It starts small with seeing a small need in one child and realizing that it is not as isolated as I thought.  I want to make a difference and help children to gain the skills they need to be successful in life.
I know that advocacy requires a lot of work and is a very emotional process.  I am an already busy person, but that is what makes advocacy so important.  People make time for the things that are important to them.  If I am to be successful as an advocate I have to be willing to do whatever it takes to get it done.  This can be exhausting and emotionally draining, but a worthy cause will benefit all in the end.
I believe that the biggest thing that will help me is to be able to find others to help me in my efforts.  I need to be able to find people that are willing to work with me and help me by encouraging me.  You need to surround yourself with people that will remind you of what you are trying to accomplish why helping you reach those goals.  In this class, as early childhood professionals, we can be encouragement to each other and help each other to remember that we are fighting for worthy goals.
