Week 8- Questions

As most of my colleagues most likely are, I am beginning to get nervous about my presentation.  One question that I have is any suggestions on how to get more people to attend my presentation.  I have several people already attending, but there are some parents that I would like to attend and I would gladly accept any advice on how to get them to attend.
I am also looking for more resources that will help me in fine tuning the literacy program that I am trying to create.  In an effort to educate and involve parents more in early literacy I am designing a backpack literacy program.  If anyone knows of a program like this that I can gain information from I would greatly appreciate it.
I have found the website "pinterest" to be very useful.  There are many different resources that can be found on there.  I was under the impression that it contained mostly crafts and recipes, but it seems to have so much more than that and I have found some sample literacy programs on there.  I hope this is helpful to my other colleagues as well.

My Personal Advocacy Journey

Let us put our minds together and see what life we can make for our children.”   Sitting Bull

I love this quote.  I live and work on the Wind River Indian Reservation.  My husband and children are Native American and I feel that this is so needed for Native American children.  Advocacy requires many people working together for the benefit of all.  I am inspired by those who are trying to make a difference right now and I want to be one of them.  It starts small with seeing a small need in one child and realizing that it is not as isolated as I thought.  I want to make a difference and help children to gain the skills they need to be successful in life.
I know that advocacy requires a lot of work and is a very emotional process.  I am an already busy person, but that is what makes advocacy so important.  People make time for the things that are important to them.  If I am to be successful as an advocate I have to be willing to do whatever it takes to get it done.  This can be exhausting and emotionally draining, but a worthy cause will benefit all in the end.
I believe that the biggest thing that will help me is to be able to find others to help me in my efforts.  I need to be able to find people that are willing to work with me and help me by encouraging me.  You need to surround yourself with people that will remind you of what you are trying to accomplish why helping you reach those goals.  In this class, as early childhood professionals, we can be encouragement to each other and help each other to remember that we are fighting for worthy goals.
